I have always wondered why they call them life lines, just high enough off the deck so one could easily fall over( I always called them death lines).
A few years ago I extended the height of my life lines by 6 inches. I had inserts made for the inside of the stanchion (slip fit). I also had stainless steel extensions made of the same size ID as the stations that are 8 inches long. Also had matching screw holes put in all pieces. Everything fits together snugly and each section has screws from both sides. They are quite sturdy and now I do not have to bend over when going forward to have something to hold on to. It is a cheap modification and can offer a real sense of being a life line.
I have been told that the Coast Guard is now recommending uncovered life lines. I do not know that for sure sooooooooooooooo. I know Jim M has put in solid life lines around the stern to the gates. Why couldn't one do the same all the way forward................................ JIM???
My life line extensions go 8 inches inside each piece of the stanchions. The new 6 inch extension part goes into the stanchion base just like the original one did.
Hope this makes sense.
